As of writing, 42 nations have qualified for the newly expanded 48-nation FIFA World Cup, which will take place in June and July 2026 in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Four remaining six nations will qualify via the European Playoffs. This round is the second round of World Cup qualifying in Europe, which ended with the 12 winners of each group qualify automatically for the final tournament, whereas the 12 runners-up and four other nations who boasted high ranking due to their 2024-25 UEFA Nations League (UNL) results advance to the final qualifying round within the continent.

The European playoffs consist of 16 nations: four paths with four nations, each. Beginning with eight one-match knockout-style semifinal matches, the eight winners will advance to the final round, which includes four matches between each of the paths’ semifinals winners. The four final-match winners will join the 12 already-qualified European nations at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Below is a short bulleted preview of each of the 16 nations competing in the European Playoffs.
