MLS in Data: Most Successful Canadian Major League Soccer Club

By: AT

A late night summer match at Stade Saputo, home of CF Montréal.

In the second piece of our MLS in Data collection, we evaluate the three Canadian Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs and determine which of the three is the most successful based on various data points. Such data include number of trophies, as well as the number of victories and win percentage since each club’s entry into MLS.

Toronto FC became the first Canadian club to compete in MLS in 2007. Vancouver Whitecaps entered MLS in 2011, and Montréal Impact (now CF Montréal) followed suit in 2012, becoming the latest Canadian club to enter MLS.

In 2026, Toronto are competing in their 20th MLS season in MLS. Vancouver are playing their 16th MLS season, while Montréal are in their 15th season.

Number of Trophies

A club winning a trophy marks the pinnacle of football. However, other than the Canadian Championship — a competition limited to Canadian clubs from several leagues within that country — the three Canadian MLS club have won a limited number of trophies. In fact, Toronto distinguish themselves as the sole Canadian club to win a single MLS trophy, winning both the MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in 2017.

The three Canadian clubs’ trophy cabinets — as MLS clubs — consist of the following:

  • CF Montréal: Canadian Championship, X4*

  • Toronto FC: Canadian Championship, X8; MLS Supporters’ Shield, X1; MLS Cup, X1

  • Vancouver Whitecaps: Canadian Championship, X4

Until 2025, on a per-season basis, Montréal win a trophy every 3.5 seasons. Toronto earn a trophy every second season. Vancouver hoist a trophy every 3.75 seasons.

It is worth noting that Toronto’s first two Canadian Championship titles (2009 and 2010) were won during a period where they were the only Canadian MLS club; Montréal and Vancouver had competed in lower divisions. Toronto’s third said title (2011) occurred when Toronto was one of two Canadian MLS clubs, with Vancouver being an MLS expansion club that year. As well, their 2020 — and latest — title was a one-match competition against Canadian Premier League club Forge FC.**

The three clubs have also finished as competition finalists a number of times, including the following:

  • CF Montréal: Canadian Championship, X3; CONCACAF Champions Cup, X1

  • Toronto FC: Canadian Championship, X6; MLS Cup, X2; CONCACAF Champions Cup, X1

  • Vancouver Whitecaps: Canadian Championship, X7; MLS Cup, X1; CONCACAF Champions Cup, X1

In 2025, Vancouver became the first of the three clubs to lose both the MLS Cup final (3-1 v. Inter Miami) and the CONCACAF Champions Cup final (5-0 v. Cruz Azul).

Number of Victories and Win Percentage

In absolute numbers, Toronto boast the most MLS victories, with 196. However, they have the lowest win percentage among the three clubs, at 30.4%. By this metric, Vancouver are the most efficient, with 191 MLS victories and a 36.4% win percentage. CF Montréal have 172 wins, corresponding to a 35.4% win percentage.

The figure below shows the total number of MLS victories and win percentage by Canadian MLS club.

Among the three clubs, based on the data, Toronto are the most decorated club, especially in MLS action. However, Vancouver are the most successful on a match-by-match basis. Toronto are the worst-ranked club by that metric, while CF Montréal — despite being the least successful team in both categories, win a larger share of their matches, trailing Vancouver in win percentage by only one percentage point.

* CF Montréal won the inaugural edition of the Canadian Championship in 2008 as a USL First Division (North American second division) club.

** The 2020 edition of the Canadian Championship, which was played in June 2022, was a one-match playoff between the winner of the Canadian Premier League — Forge FC — and the highest-ranking Canadian MLS club based on head-to-head matchups between the three MLS clubs during the 2020 MLS regular season.

We will present more data for this piece in the near future.
