In this eighth piece of our MLS in Data collection, we evaluate the three Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs from the Cascadia region (northern West coast) and determine which of these are the most successful based on various data points. Such data include number of trophies, as well as the number of victories and win percentage since each club’s entry into MLS. The three clubs included in this analysis are Portland Timbers, Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps.
All three Cascadia clubs entered MLS within a two-year period. Seattle Sounders first played in MLS season in 2009, followed by Portland and Vancouver in 2011. Seattle became the 15th MLS club at the time, while Portland and Vancouver joined as the 17th and 18th clubs.
In 2026, Seattle are competing in their 18th MLS season in MLS, while Portland and Vancouver are both appearing in their 16th seasons.
Number of Trophies and Finals
Although LA Galaxy boast the highest number of MLS Cup and MLS Supporters’ Shield titles, Seattle are arguably the most successful MLS club due to the various titles won. As noted in our first MLS in Data article, Seattle have won the most MLS Cup titles among Cascadian clubs, with two. Both of their titles were within a four-year period between 2016 and 2019. They also hoisted the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2014.
In addition to MLS, Seattle were crowned champions of the U.S. Open Cup — the United States’ domestic cup competition — four times over the 2009 to 2014 period, including in each of their first three seasons in MLS (2009–2011).
Moreover, in 2022, Seattle became the first — and to date, only — MLS club to win the CONCACAF Champions League (now Champions Cup) after defeating Liga MX club Pumas UNAM 5-2 on aggregate.
Portland have also won some silverware, including the MLS Cup in 2015 and the one-time MLS is Back Tournament in COVID-19–ridden 2020. Vancouver have yet to win an MLS title, but have experienced success in Canada’s domestic cup competition, earning the title five times, including on four consecutive occasions from 2022 to 2025.
The three clubs’ trophy cabinets since entering MLS consist of the following:
Portland: MLS Cup, X1; MLS is Back Tournament, X1
Seattle: MLS Cup, X2; MLS Supporters’ Shield, X1; U.S. Open Cup, X4; CONCACAF Champions League, X1; Leagues Cup, X1
Vancouver: Canadian Championship, X5
Until 2025, on a per-season basis, Seattle have won a trophy approximately every two seasons, while Portland and Vancouver have earned a trophy about every seven-and-a-half and three seasons, respectively.
In addition to their two MLS Cup titles, Seattle have also lost two MLS Cup Final matches — in 2017 against Toronto FC and in 2020 against Columbus Crew — which brings their total number of MLS Cup Final appearances to four. They also finished as runners-up for the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2011. As well, the Washington-based club saw their U.S. Open Cup reign come to an end in the 2012 final, losing on penalties against Sporting Kansas City (1-1 after extra-time).
Portland have also lost two MLS Cup Final matches — in 2018 against Atlanta United and in 2021 against New York City FC — bringing their total number of MLS Cup Final appearances to three.
Vancouver appeared in their first MLS Cup Final in 2025, becoming the second Canadian MLS club to appear in that match. They lost 2-1 against Inter Miami. The British Columbia-based club also finished as runners-up for the Canadian Championships a record seven times, including on five consecutive occasions from 2009 to 2013.*

By the Fans, for the Fans: The Cascadia Cup
Unlike numerous MLS clubs, all three Cascadian clubs have competed against each other in various leagues before entering MLS. This pre-MLS history has enabled the three-club rivalry to gain prominence and, in turn, become one of the best rivalries on the continent.
As a result, the three clubs also compete for the Cascadia Cup, a fan-created trophy awarded annually to the club with the best head-to-head record from the matches played among themselves. Created in 2004, the competition matches also count towards the league standings; MLS Cup Playoff, CONCACAF Champions Cup and Leagues Cup matches involving two of the three clubs and U.S. Open Cup matches between Portland and Seattle do not count towards Cascadia Cup standings.
Since 2004, Vancouver have won the most Cascadia Cups, with nine: three in the pre-MLS era (pre-2011) and six in the MLS era. Vancouver hoisted the 2026 Cascadia Cup following their 5-1 home victory against Seattle on November 1. Figure 2 presents the total number of Cascadia Cups won by each of the three Cascadian clubs.
Cascadia Cups Won Between 2004 and 2026
| Club | Trophies won pre-MLS | Trophies won post-MLS expansion |
|---|---|---|
| Portland Timbers | 2 | 7 |
| Seattle Sounders | 2 | 3 |
| Vancouver Whitecaps | 3 | 5 |
Due to playing in a different league, Seattle Sounders were ineligible to compete for the Cascadia Cup during the 2009 and 2010 editions.
