In this sixth piece of our MLS in Data collection, we evaluate the three Texan Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs and determine which of these are the most successful based on various data points. Such data include number of trophies, as well as the number of victories and win percentage since each club’s entry into MLS.
FC Dallas are among the 10 clubs that played in the inaugural MLS season in 1996. Initially called Dallas Burn, they rebranded to FC Dallas in 2005. The following year, Houston gained a club following the relocation of the San Jose Earthquakes, becoming the Houston Dynamo. Austin FC entered MLS in 2021, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2026, Dallas are competing in their 31st MLS season in MLS, while Houston and Austin are appearing in their 21st and sixth seasons, respectively.
Number of Trophies and Finals
As noted in our first MLS in Data article, Houston have won the most MLS Cup titles among Texas-based clubs, with two. Both of their titles were won in consecutive years in 2006 and 2007, achieving very early success following relocation. Dallas and Austin both have zero MLS Cup titles to their name.
Dallas have also won some silverware, which includes becoming the sole Texas-based club to win the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2016. However, that club’s accomplishments are quite limited, despite playing in every MLS season. Austin, meanwhile, have yet to win a title, but have come close on three occasions.
The three clubs’ trophy cabinets consist of the following:
Austin: None
Dallas: MLS Supporters’ Shield, X1; U.S. Open Cup, X2
Houston: MLS Cup, X2; U.S. Open Cup, X2
Until 2025, on a per-season basis, Houston have won a trophy approximately every five seasons, while Dallas have earned a trophy about every 10 seasons.
In addition to their two MLS Cup titles, Houston have also lost two MLS Cup Final matches in consecutive years — both times against the LA Galaxy in 2011 and 2012 — bringing their total number of MLS Cup Final appearances to four. The three clubs have also finished as runners-up for the 2008 MLS Supporters’ Shield.
Dallas are part of the unlucky clubs to have participated in an MLS Cup final but have yet to win the grand prize. They lost the 2010 final 2-1 after extra-time against the Colorado Rapids. They also finished as runners-up for the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2006 and 2015 and for the U.S. Open Cup in 2005 and 2007.
Austin lost the U.S. Open Cup final 2-1 against Nashville SC in 2025 and came close to winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in 2022, their second year in MLS.
Number of Victories and Win Percentage
As of October 18, 2026, in absolute numbers, FC Dallas have the highest number of MLS victories among the three Texan clubs, with 409. They also boast the strongest win percentage among the three clubs, at 39.3%. Houston have accumulated 255 victories and possess the second-best win percentage, at 35.4%. Having played in the least number of seasons, Austin FC evidently boast the lowest number of victories among Texan MLS clubs (67), winning 32.7% of their matches.
