The 2025-26 UEFA Champions League (UCL) kicked off its first matches from September 8-10 and will resume on October 13, 2026. Europe’s — and arguably the world’s — most prestigious competition brings high-quality football every year from September to May or June of the following year, depending on the date of the final.
The 2026-27 UCL should be no different, with Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defending their title and seeking a historic three-peat. Meanwhile, Premier League (EPL) club and defending UCL runners-up Arsenal FC aim to exorcise their demons and capture their first UCL title, while LaLiga club FC Barcelona hope to extend their domestic dominance onto the continental stage and win their first UCL title of the post—tiki-taka/Lionel Messi era.
Overview
The 2026-27 UCL campaign will be the 35th edition of the competition since it was rebranded from the European Cup ahead of the 1992-93 season. It will also be the third edition to feature a 36-team league stage and a knockout playoff round preceding the round of 16. This format replaced the previous 32-team group stage and expanded the knockout stage from four rounds, beginning with the round of 16, to five. For more information on the format, see our timeless article describing the 36-team league stage and subsequent knockout-stage format.
PSG are the sole club to have won the UCL title since the introduction of this relatively new format. Interestingly, they had to compete in the knockout playoff round on both occasions after failing to qualify automatically for the round of 16. The eight highest-ranked clubs in the league stage advance directly to the round of 16, while clubs ranked from ninth to 24th must compete in the playoff round. The bottom 12 clubs are eliminated from the competition.
Debutants
Among the 36 clubs participating in the 2026-27 UCL edition, three have made their first competition appearance on matchday 1:
Como 1907 (Serie A, Italy);
Sabah FK (Azerbaijan Premier League, Azerbaijan); and
Viking FK (Eliteserien, Norway).
Of the three debutants, Como boast the strongest chance of making a significant impact and potentially advancing to the competition’s knockout stage. Led by former star midfielder Cesc Fàbragas, Como boast a star-studded squad featuring goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, defender Trevoh Chalobah, midfielder Maxence Caqueret and forward Nico Paz. On September 10, Como won their inaugural UCL match, defeating Bundesliga club RB Leipzig 4-1 at home.
Notable Absentees
Alongside its debutants and surprise participants, the UCL also features several notable absences, as some fail to qualify due to poor domestic campaigns in the previous season. Notable absentees in this year’s UCL include:
Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen;
EPL clubs Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur;
LaLiga clubs Athletic Club and Real Sociedad;
Ligue 1 clubs AS Monaco, Olympique Lyonnais and Olympique de Marseille;
Liga Portugal club SL Benfica;
Serie A clubs AC Milan, Juventus FC and SS Lazio; and
Turkish Süper Lig club Besiktas.
Better luck to these clubs for qualifying this season!
Previous Winners by Club
Since the UCL’s inception in 1992-93, 15 clubs have won the UCL title. That number increases to 24 when accounting for the European Cup, which was Europe’s top competition from 1955-56 to 1991-92.
LaLiga club Real Madrid are by far the most successful club in European Cup/UCL history, having won a record 15 titles. They claimed the competition’s first five titles and remain the only club to hoist three consecutive titles in the UCL era, from 2015-16 to 2017-18.
The next most successful clubs are AC Milan with seven titles, followed by, Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and EPL club Liverpool FC with six each.

As well, seven domestic leagues have been represented among UCL winners since 1992-93. The number increases to 10 when accounting for European Cup winners.
LaLiga clubs have enjoyed the most success, combining for 20 titles. The EPL and Serie rank second and third, respectively.

Our Predictions
After careful consideration of such factors as matchday 1 performances, current short- and long-term injuries, recent form, squad quality and collective UCL experience, we predict that Bundesliga club Bayern Munich will win the 2026-27 UCL title, thereby dethroning PSG.
Although we had unsuccessfully predicted them as last season’s UCL winners, the club gained valuable experience through a laudable run to the semifinals and a domestic double, winning Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. Harry Kane and Michael Olise continue to excel, particularly after impressive 2026 World Cup performances, while Luis Díaz remains as reliable as ever. Moreover, manager Vincent Kompany grew into his role during his first season at Bayern and can rely not only on elite attacking talent but also on strong depth throughout the squad.
Our second and third picks are PSG and Barcelona. PSG possess the talent and experience to contend for the title, though they have begun to show signs of fatigue after three long and demanding seasons. Barcelona also boast elite talent and, under 2019-20 UCL-winning manager Hansi Flick, have the ambition and momentum to reach new heights.
