FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage Tracker: Number of FIFA World Cup Knockout-Stage Qualifications, Appearances and Wins

The 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage kicked off on Sunday, June 28, with co-hosts Canada winning 1-0 against South Africa in Los Angeles, California. Ironically, Canada became the first host (or co-host) nation to play a World Cup match outside of its borders. Both nations also made their World Cup knockout-stage debut.
With the tournament expanded to 48 nations, many nations will either make a rare knockout-stage appearance or play their first match at that stage. The tournament’s expansion also results in one additional round, providing more opportunities for lower-ranked nations to play at a higher level and offering both lower- and higher-ranked nations to gain more experience in do-or-die matches. For instance, the round of 32 can benefit a country like Switzerland, which despite qualifying for the knockout stage for a fourth consecutive tournament since 2006 — being only one of four nations to do so — it has not won a knockout-stage match since 1938.
This article comprises data compiled from various nations’ match histories.
Most Knockout-Stage and Latter-Stage Qualifications
Since 1930 — the year in which the first World Cup took place — Brazil has qualified the highest number of times for either the knockout stage or a latter stage* of the tournament, doing so 19 times and having gone all the way to win the trophy five times. (La Seleção were eliminated in the group stage only once in 1966.)
Also since 1930, defending World Cup champions Argentina has qualified for either the knockout stage or the latter stages 15 times, while England and Germany** were rewarded with such an outcome on 14 occasions.
Figure 1 shows data on the number of knockout-stage and latter-stage qualifications for the 32 nations participating in the 2026 World Cup knockout stage and the last year — before 2026 — they managed to do so; the data exclude the 2026 tournament.
Notes: Excludes the 1934 and 1938 tournaments, which comprised solely knockout rounds. All qualified nations automatically participated in the round of 16.
Latter stages include any round after the first group-stage round.

Most Knockout-Stage and Latter-Stage Match Appearances
From the 1930 tournament to that of 2022, Germany possesses the highest number of knockout-stage and latter-stage match appearances among the 32 participants in this year’s knockout stage, with 59. Brazil ranks second in this category, with 54 appearances.
Argentina is the nation that comes closest to Brazil and Germany, with 37 appearances. Moreover, despite only one World Cup title shared between them, the Netherlands and England have accumulated 28 and 26 appearances, respectively.

Most Knockout-Stage and Latter-Stage Match Victories
Throughout the 1930–2022 period, Germany has earned the highest number of knockout-stage and latter-stage match victories among the 32 participants in this year’s knockout stage, with 38 (including matches won via penalty shootout). As a result, in the lead up to the 2026 knockout stage, Germany has won 64.4% of its knockout-stage and latter-stage matches. Brazil also ranks second in this category, with 34 victories; La Seleção has therefore won 63.0% of their knockout-stage and latter-stage matches.
Rounding out the top five in this category are France, Argentina and the Netherlands, having won 23, 21 and 15 matches at these stages, respectively. Among the top five nations in this category, France possesses the best win percentage in the knockout-stage and latter-stages of World Cup tournaments, with 71.9%.
