The 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals concluded on July 11, with England and Argentina joining France and Spain in the semifinals. The semifinal matches will take place on July 14 in Arlington, Texas and July 15 in Atlanta, Georgia. The two winners will advance to the final on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, while the two losers will play the third-place match on July 18 in Miami.
Reaching a World Cup semifinal is never a foregone conclusion, regardless of the competing nation and its strength. Becoming a semifinalist generally requires at least three to four victories, and usually means eliminating at least one top-15 nation along the way.
FIFA World Cup Semifinals Appearances
Based on our data collection, from 1930 to 2022, 25 nations have appeared in at least one World Cup semifinal or have finished among the tournament’s top four nations. (In 1974 and 1978, the rounds preceding the final and third-place match were structured as a second group stage involving the last eight nations.)
During the 1930–2026 period, Germany (including its years competing as West Germany, from 1950 to 1990) has finished in the top four a record 13 times, with 12 semifinal appearances. However, Die Mannschaft’s last semifinal appearance was in 2014, when it famously defeated Brazil 7-1 and then beat Argentina 1-0 after extra-time in the final, claiming its fourth World Cup title. That semifinal’s loser, Brazil, has finished in the top four 11 times and reached the semifinals eight times, ranking second in this category. Italy and France jointly rank third in total top-four finishes, but France has more semifinal appearances (8) than Italy (7).
The 2026 World Cup semifinalists — Argentina, England, France and Spain — combine for 20 semifinal appearances, including this year’s tournament. France leads the four nations with eight appearances, having reached the semifinals in each of the last three World Cup tournaments. Argentina will be appearing in a sixth semifinal, while England and Spain will be making their fourth and second appearances, respectively.
Figure 1 shows the 25 nations that have finished among the four highest-ranked nations at a World Cup from 1930 to 2026, along with the last year each nation reached that stage. The figure was last updated on July 12, 2026.
* Excludes 1950 FIFA World Cup, in which the final-four round was the last round of the tournament, and the 2026 World Cup.
The four highest-ranked nations from the 1974 and 1978 World Cup qualified directly from the second group-stage to either the final or the third-place playoff match; no semifinal matches took place.
Germany's total includes appearances by West Germany, which reached the final four at every World Cup from 1954 to 1990.

FIFA World Cup Final Appearances
Also from 1930 to 2022, only 13 of the 25 Semifinalists that have reached a World Cup semifinal have appeared in a World Cup final. Germany/West Germany leads all nations with eight final appearances, winning four titles (1954, 1974 and 1990 as West Germany, and 2014 as Germany). Argentina, Brazil and Italy have each appeared in six finals; Brazil holds the record for most World Cup titles with five, while Italy and Argentina have won four and three titles, respectively. France has reached four finals, including the last two editions, and has won two titles.
